India Vs Pakistan Top 5 Matches

India-Pakistan encounters are always riveting for millions around the globe, whether they're World Cup quarter-finals or T20 matches. Here, we take a look back at some of their most exciting moments during cricket's shortest format.

An incredible match that saw Pakistan's top order crumble under pressure and Rohit Sharma smashing an unbeaten 114 off 106 balls to seal victory was truly memorable and made this match one of the greatest T20 encounters ever between these archrivals.

1. India vs Pakistan World Cup 1996 Quarter-Final

India-Pakistan rivalry is among the fiercest in world sport. These two sides rank among the most beloved teams in international cricket and their games consistently draw large crowds and worldwide interest. At its heart lies an intricate mix of factors which extend far beyond cricket; political and diplomatic tensions between both nations have played a part in forging this rivalry that has seen full-scale wars, major military clashes, border incidents and numerous incidents over time.

Politics, religious belief and cultural issues all play into this rivalry between two countries that transcends cricket fields; it serves as an avenue for communication and reconciliation between them all. Cricket provides both sides an opportunity to interact with one another on its playing fields while building bridges of peace between nations.

Since 1947 and the division of British India into two separate nations, India and Pakistan have met regularly in cricket competition. India won nine out of 17 Asia Cups while Pakistan claimed five. India also prevailed 11 times out of 16 One Day International series against each other while winning 5.

India and Pakistan are currently engaged in an escalation of tension following an attack on Indian soldiers in Kashmir – territory claimed by both nations and claimed in various ways by them both – which resulted in India carrying out missile strikes in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, sparking retaliatory measures from Pakistan. Tensions further escalated following exchanges of fire along the Line of Control between both sides which caused multiple civilian casualties on both sides.

Pakistan will face India in their upcoming game as a test of their ability to reverse recent results and restore some form of pride in their performance. Though a daunting challenge, they should not shy away from taking it on.

2. India vs Pakistan 1999 Chennai Test

At a Chennai stadium on January 31st 1999 – on the fourth day of their first Test between India and Pakistan since 1991 – police were present ringing the pitch, while another set were busy dispersing an audience chanting “Bhai harega, Pakistan harega” in Tamil. Meanwhile a group of men were sitting and watching. It was the fourth day of that inaugural Test match.

Before the series could commence, tension was running high. Just three weeks prior to its starting date, supporters of Shiv Sena – a right-wing party jointly in power with Bharatiya Janata Party in Maharashtra – dug up part of Delhi's Ferozeshah Kotla stadium where it was due to take place for this first Test match.

3. India vs Pakistan 2021 World Cup

India and Pakistan have faced off 17 times in T20 Internationals (T20Is), with India winning 14 to Pakistan's three. Six of those meetings took place at ICC T20 World Cups with India coming out victorious each time; additionally they met six times during Asia Cup T20Is with India winning 13 of those encounters compared to Pakistan winning three times.

In ODI cricket, India and Pakistan have played 16 series, splitting them evenly – five being in India while five in Pakistan have taken place – with both sides winning nine series each. They also engaged in three one-day internationals played at neutral venues – two ending without result and the final match featuring an interesting low scoring contest.

India and Pakistan have been engaging in an enduring sporting rivalry for more than 100 years; since first competing against each other on an official level. Over this time, both nations have become embroiled in an often bitter political feud which has found expression through sports competition. Match-ups between them often cause religious or political controversy – for instance when Shiv Sena workers dug up the pitch at Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in New Delhi on the eve of an India-Pakistan cricket matchup on 1991.

Recently, however, relations have seen significant improvement between India and Pakistan. Their rivalry has become less contentious and more friendly; recent Netflix documentary Frenemies Forever brought together many of their top players to recognize and honour each side's rich history. Let us hope this positive trend continues at 2021 World Cup tournament held in Australia and New Zealand!

4. India vs Pakistan 2003 Centurion Test

India-Pakistan rivalry, for geopolitical, sociocultural or any other reasons, is unmatched and unforgettable in cricket's world of cricket. Every match between these sides can be considered warlike; their results have major ramifications.

This war was no different: in its lead-up, India experienced an atmosphere of mounting tensions on both sides, including reports of terrorist activity in Jammu and Kashmir and an ongoing stand-off between Indian and Pakistani troops along the border following Kargil – leading to many casualties on both sides.

But this match represented an opportunity for India to reassert their dominance while giving young stars such as Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh and Rahul Dravid the chance to prove themselves and become national heroes.

Indian batsman Tendulkar took to the crease first and immediately faced up to the challenge ahead. Determined not to succumb to pressure from other great players, Tendulkar produced an outstanding innings, scoring 98 runs – narrowly missing a century by just five runs!

He played an innings that showed his brilliance. Taking on an intimidating Pakistani attack that included Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Waqar Younis, Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq was no easy task; these four could kill any day on fast and bouncy Centurion tracks; these weren't easy victories either – this challenge presented itself only recently to India's younger batsmen.

5. India vs Pakistan 1999 Sharjah Test

Pakistan's tour to India in 1998-99 coincided with an on-going war between them over Kargil. Shortly after this match, President Musharraf seized power, suspended the constitution, and declared martial law due to Indian troops entering Pakistan-administered areas in Kashmir.

Pakistan amassed 315/3 with half-centuries from Younis and Salman Butt to post 315/3, before India crumbled to 158/7 as Pakistan closed out the game with ease. This victory marked Pakistan's inaugural Champions Trophy final triumph and continued their pattern from late 1990s neutral-venue ODI final wins with greater middle-order strength and quicker chases than India in neutral venues ODI finals – including Kapil Dev's 1985 success and Pakistan's 2017 Oval upset that marked their rivalry forever.
