Want the short answer? Your seven best bets for golden-hour engagement photos in Malibu are El Matador State Beach, Point Dume, Zuma Beach, Malibu Pier, Malibu Bluffs Park, Solstice Canyon, and Escondido Falls. Rocks, sand, canyon, pier, waterfall, pick your vibe. Below is what each one actually looks like at sunset, and the stuff nobody tells you about permits, parking, and tides until you're standing on the beach in your dress, wondering why the ocean just ate your shoes.

Why Malibu, Specifically

I'm Wayne, I run You Look Good Today Photography out of LA, and before this was a job, I co-founded an adventure brand called Wondery Outdoors. Translation: I've spent way too many hours scrambling around cliffs and trails with a camera strapped to me for free, long before anyone paid me to do it. Malibu is basically where all that finally pays off.

The real reason it works so well for engagement photos is variety. You've got dramatic rock formations, quiet canyons, a classic pier, wide-open bluffs, all within a short drive of each other, all 30-45 minutes or so from most of LA, depending on traffic (it's always traffic). That's a big part of why it's one of the most requested spots for couples working with a Los Angeles engagement or wedding photographer.

When Is Golden Hour, Actually

Golden hour is the stretch of low, warm light right before sunset (sunrise works too, if you're one of those people). In Malibu, I tell couples to plan on arriving 60-90 minutes before actual sunset for their date, enough time to park, walk to the spot, and get settled before the light does its thing. Sunset time moves a lot across the year in LA, so check it for your actual shoot date instead of trusting whatever number is floating around in your head from last summer.

One more thing worth knowing: Southern California gets “June gloom,” a marine layer that can hang over the coast through late spring and early summer and swallow your sunset before it ever turns gold. It usually burns off by late afternoon, but if you want a dramatic, colorful sky, fall and winter tend to give you more consistently clear evenings in Malibu. Not a dealbreaker either way, some couples love the softer, moody light a little haze gives you, just good to know before you lock in a date.

Permit rules get enforced inconsistently depending on the day and the ranger on duty, so treat this table as a starting point, not gospel. I handle the actual permit checking before your date, so you're not the one negotiating with a guy in a park uniform.

Breaking Down All Seven

1. El Matador State Beach

This is the beach people picture when they picture Malibu. Towering rock formations, sea caves, and a wooden staircase down to the sand that somehow makes every single couple look like they're in a film. At golden hour, the rocks go this deep orange that you genuinely cannot fake in Lightroom, no matter how good your presets are.

It's also one of the most photographed beaches on the coast, which means weekends can get crowded with other shoots happening in the background. It's a State Beach, so professional photography here generally needs a permit through LA County Beaches and Harbors. Check the tide schedule too, at high tide, a good chunk of the beach just disappears, and “the ocean ate our engagement shoot” isn't the story anyone's telling at the wedding toast.

2. Point Dume State Beach

Point Dume is a bluff that shoots straight out into the Pacific, and the view from the top, Santa Monica Bay on one side, the coastline curling off on the other, is stupid good. You basically get two locations for the price of one: the cliffside preserve up top for wide, dramatic shots, and the beach below for something more classic.

It sits about a mile and a half from Zuma, so some couples do both in one session if they want variety without extra driving. Same deal as El Matador on the permit front, and heads up, the trail down to the beach has real elevation change. Heels are not your friend here. Neither is a floor-length dress you're precious about.

3. Zuma Beach

Zuma is Malibu's biggest, most no-nonsense beach, and honestly, sometimes that's exactly what a couple wants, no cliffs to climb, no staircase, no hike, just wide open sand and consistent surf in the background. There's room to actually move around instead of dodging strangers walking into every frame.

It also makes a solid backup. If El Matador's too crowded or the tide's wrong or your permit didn't clear in time, Zuma's close by and almost always workable. It photographs great at golden hour without any of the logistics headaches of its flashier neighbors.

4. Malibu Pier & Surfrider Beach

If you want that classic SoCal postcard, whitewashed pier, blue railings, surfers catching waves behind you, this is it, and you don't need to hike or climb anything to get it. It's flat and walkable, which makes it one of the easiest locations on this list for anyone in formalwear or heels.

There's a date-night energy to it too. A lot of couples grab coffee or a drink nearby before or after, and that tends to loosen everyone up in front of the camera way more than standing still and “smiling naturally” ever does. Permit enforcement here is looser than the state beaches, but I still check before your date so nothing surprises us.

5. Malibu Bluffs Park

This one's public land, so no permit headache, and it's honestly built for exactly this kind of shoot, 84 acres of open, grassy bluffs looking out over the Santa Monica Mountains and the coastline. All that open space means real movement in your photos: hair, dresses, jackets actually catching the wind instead of just hanging there.

It's the low-effort, high-payoff option if you want dramatic light without tide charts, permits, or a hike involved. It sits right on PCH across from Pepperdine, so it's also one of the easiest locations on this list to actually find on the first try.

6. Solstice Canyon

Solstice Canyon is for couples who'd rather hike than pose on sand. It's part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, so no beach permit to worry about, and it's got century-old ruins, a small waterfall, and thick green canyon terrain that looks nothing like every other “Malibu beach” engagement photo out there.

Given the whole Wondery Outdoors background, this is genuinely one of my favorite spots to shoot. It rewards a photographer who's comfortable off pavement and knows where the light actually cuts through the canopy. If your relationship has been built more around hiking trips than dinner reservations, this is your place.

7. Escondido Falls

Escondido Falls means a short hike up a canyon trail to an actual waterfall. Not a “trickle you have to angle the camera juuust right for” situation, a real one. Most people don't think “waterfall” when they think Malibu, and that novelty photographs really well.

It's a public trail, so no permit needed, but you're sharing the space with hikers and dealing with the walk itself. Great option if you want photos that look nothing like anyone else's Malibu engagement session, and don't mind trading a little comfort for it. Wear shoes you can actually hike in, this is the one location on this list where “cute sandals” will genuinely betray you.

So, Do You Actually Need a Permit?

For most State Beaches around Malibu, El Matador, Point Dume, Zuma, professional photography with a camera, lighting, or any real equipment technically needs a permit through the LA County Department of Beaches and Harbors, even for a tiny crew of two people and a ring light. Public parks and National Park Service land, like Malibu Bluffs and Solstice Canyon, don't require the same permitting for a small engagement session.

Enforcement is hit or miss, depending on the day and the ranger, which is exactly why it's worth working with someone who already knows which spots need paperwork and handles it ahead of time instead of finding out mid-shoot with a stranger in uniform standing over your shoulder.

Getting Ready for Your Malibu Session

A few things that make the actual shoot go smoother, no matter which spot you pick:

  • Check the tide schedule if you're shooting on the beach. High tide can swallow a big chunk of El Matador or the beach below Point Dume.
  • Bring a backup outfit. Sand, wind, and salt water are not gentle on anything nice, and a second look gives you more variety anyway.
  • Skip the heels for cliffs or trails. Point Dume, Solstice Canyon, and Escondido Falls all involve uneven ground.
  • Show up before golden hour actually starts. You want to be settled in, not still finding parking when the light turns.
  • Have a backup plan for fog or rain. Malibu weather flips fast near the coast, and a photographer who can adjust matters more than a perfect forecast.
  • Just trust the process. My whole thing as a luxury wedding photographer in Los Angeles is making you comfortable enough that the shitty jokes and the real laughing are what end up in your photos, not some stiff, posed nonsense that looks like your DMV photo got dressed up.

Questions People Actually Ask

  1. What's the best time for golden-hour engagement photos in Malibu? Start 60-90 minutes before sunset on your actual shoot date. Sunset times shift a lot through the year in LA, so don't guess based on last summer.
  2. Do I need a permit for engagement photos at Malibu beaches? For State Beaches like El Matador, Point Dume, and Zuma, yes, typically. Public parks like Malibu Bluffs and National Park land like Solstice Canyon generally don't require one for a small session.
  3. Which spot is best if we don't want to hike? Malibu Pier, Zuma Beach, and Malibu Bluffs Park are all flat with no trail or real elevation change.
  4. How far out should we book a Malibu session? As early as you can, once you've got a date, especially for the state beaches, permit paperwork takes lead time, and the good weekday slots go fast.
  5. Can we still do a Malibu shoot if we're not based in LA? Yep. You Look Good Today Photography works with couples flying in for engagement and wedding sessions, plus destination shoots outside of California entirely.

About the Guy Taking the Photos

I'm Wayne Borromeo, the photographer behind You Look Good Today. Based in LA, co-founder of the adventure brand Wondery Outdoors, and when I'm not shooting, I'm probably rock climbing, road-tripping, eating way too much KBBQ, or drinking Topo Chico like it's a personality trait, because it is. My whole approach to engagement and wedding photography is cinematic and direction-driven, built around real moments instead of stiff, forced posing, and I shoot couples, families, and best friends too, not just people getting married.
