Sleep Apnea 101: Everything You Need to Know About This Common Sleep Disorder

Sleep is essential for physical and mental health, but millions of people experience disrupted sleep without realizing it. Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. These interruptions can occur dozens or even hundreds of times each night, reducing oxygen levels and preventing restful sleep. If left untreated, sleep apnea may increase the risk of serious health problems.

There are three main types of sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common form and occurs when the muscles in the throat relax too much, blocking the airway. Central sleep apnea (CSA) happens when the brain fails to send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing. Complex sleep apnea syndrome is a combination of both obstructive and central sleep apnea.

Many people with sleep apnea are unaware they have the condition because the symptoms occur during sleep. Common warning signs include loud snoring, gasping or choking during sleep, morning headaches, excessive daytime sleepiness, difficulty concentrating, irritability, and waking up with a dry mouth or sore throat. Family members often notice the breathing pauses before the affected person does.

Several factors can increase the risk of developing sleep apnea, including obesity, older age, smoking, alcohol use, enlarged tonsils, and certain anatomical features that narrow the airway. Medical conditions such as high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes are also commonly associated with the disorder.

Diagnosis usually involves a medical evaluation and a sleep study, which monitors breathing, oxygen levels, heart rate, and sleep patterns. Treatment depends on the severity of the condition and may include lifestyle changes, weight loss, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, oral appliances, or surgery in selected cases.

Early diagnosis and proper treatment can significantly improve sleep quality, daytime energy, and overall health. If you or a loved one experiences persistent snoring or excessive daytime fatigue, consulting a healthcare professional is an important step toward better sleep and long-term well-being.
